Why Are Some of My Grandaddy Purple Plants Struggling While Others Thrive?Updated a day ago
It's not uncommon for growers to see different levels of vigor in the same seed pack — even with a stable, well-loved strain like Grandaddy Purple. If you're noticing that two out of four plants are thriving while the others seem weak or failing, here's what might be going on:
🌱 Seed Vigor Variability
Even within the same pack, not every seed has the same internal energy. Some sprout fast and strong, while others may struggle from the start.
🧬 Early Development Issues
Slow or stunted growth from sprout can be caused by:
Weak taproot development
Overwatering or poor drainage
Low humidity or temperature shock during early seedling stages
🪴 Hardening Off vs. Weak Starts
If the vital plants are already hardening off (toughening their stems and adapting to outdoor conditions), but the others never gained momentum, it’s likely the weak ones experienced early stress or had internal developmental issues.
🔍 What You Can Do
Check the roots if possible — are they white and healthy or discolored and stunted?
Compare soil moisture between the healthy and weak ones
Look for signs of damping off (thin, weak stems at the base)
